More about Bar Stools

Bar Stools vs Counter Stools — Which Height Do You Need?

One of the most common questions when choosing kitchen stools buyers ask is: what height do I need?

  • Counter stools suit standard kitchen benches and islands (typically ~90cm high). A seat height of approximately 65–70cm provides comfortable legroom with the recommended 20–25cm of clearance beneath the surface.
  • Bar stools suit raised bars and home bar counters (typically 105–110cm high). A seat height of approximately 75–85cm is appropriate for these surfaces.

A practical tip: measure from the floor to the underside of your bench, then subtract 25–30cm to find your ideal seat height. Allow approximately 600mm of bench width per stool for comfortable side-by-side seating.

What to Look for in a Designer Bar Stool

Key considerations when selecting luxury bar stools:

  • Back support — backless stools (Fifties Backless, Glide Counter Stool) offer a minimal profile suited to streamlined kitchens; stools with backs (Glide Stool, Luk Counter Stool) provide greater comfort for extended sitting
  • Footrest position — a correctly positioned footrest at approximately 20–25cm from the base is essential for comfort at bar height
  • Material palette — rattan (Luk range) brings warmth and texture; upholstered seats (Odd Upholstered, Inlay) add comfort and refinement; formed metal (Fifties, Skin) suits minimalist interiors
  • Statement options — the Joker Bar Stool and Angeles Stool by Timothy Oulton offer distinctive character for spaces that call for something more sculptural
